Company must conduct studies before Mt. Kaaikop forestry project begins

02/03/2014

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to inform the community that Group Crête, a forestry company that is involved in a logging project planned for Mt. Kaaikop, has been informed by court decree to conduct studies before any cutting is to begin.

Mt. Kaaikop is located near Ste. Lucie, Quebec, which is the town adjacent to the Tioweró:ton Territory. Last fall the MCK had agreed to lend support to the Ste. Lucie city council and others in opposition and delivered an affidavit to Quebec Superior Court in January reiterating its position.

The biggest concern of those in opposition was that the project could involve ‘clear cutting,’ which could have negative effects on the environment in the region.
