Grand Chief pleased with meetings with Quebec cabinet ministers

11/26/2013

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to provide information to Kahnawa’kehró:non regarding meetings that took place in Kahnawà:ke yesterday with three (3) Quebec cabinet ministers.

The first, with Aboriginal Affairs Minister Elizabeth Larouche, was held to discuss the current relationship between Kahnawà:ke and Quebec. The Minister reaffirmed Quebec’s commitment to Kahnawà:ke in terms of economic development and the continued efforts to bridge the issues between the Government of Quebec and Kahnawà:ke. Discussion also took place regarding tourism opportunities and an English-language regional adult education facility.

Minister Larouche made a commitment to return to the community in spring 2014.

The second meeting was specific to economic development along Highway 30. It was attended by Grand Chief Delisle; Intergovernmental Affairs Portfolio Chief Lloyd Phillips; Minister Larouche; Minister for Industrial Policy and the Economic Development Bank of Quebec Elaine Zakaib; Minister of Education, Recreation & Sports and Minister responsible for the Montérégie Region Marie Malavoy; and representatives from Tewatohnhi’saktha.

“The meeting with the three ministers was very successful in terms of showing the opportunities that exist in Kahnawà:ke along Highway 30,” said Chief Delisle. “While they (the ministers) are on a consultation tour of communities along the 30, we want to assure Kahnawa’kehró:non that yesterday’s meeting was not to be considered as such but, rather, a good opportunity to put our position forward and ensure the we need to be considered as a strong development partner.”
