Chief Lloyd Phillips unsuccessful in AFNQL Regional Chief bid
01/30/2013
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to inform the community that Chief Lloyd Phillips was unsuccessful in his bid to unseat incumbent Ghislain Picard for the position of Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador Regional Chief.
Picard was re-elected by the count of 23-12. Each member community has one vote.
“First, let me congratulate Chief Picard,” said Chief Phillips. “I knew going into the election that I was the underdog. Most chiefs agree that I won the debate, had a stronger speech, and appreciated my vision. However, Ghislain has strong roots with some Nations and they stuck by him.
“I will remain involved with the AFNQL, representing Kahnawà:ke at this level to make sure that our voice is heard,” he continued. “The politics and what happens at the regional and national level are very important to our community. I will work with Mr. Picard to ensure that we don’t remain idle!”
“I commend Lloyd on his attempt to become Regional Chief of the AFNQL,” stated Grand Chief Michael Ahríhron Delisle, Jr., who seconded Chief Phillip’s nomination, participated in the vote. “Although he was not elected he showed the leadership and determination required for the position. I welcome him back to the table. He will continue to be an integral piece to our community’s leadership. Good job!”
Chief Clinton Phillips was also present to show support for his friend and colleague.
