MCK issues reminder to community regarding tonight’s Education Meeting
01/14/2013
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to remind community members that a meeting being called tonight by the Kahnawake Combined Schools Committee should be considered ‘for information purposes only’ as the agenda does not indicate that any decisions are being proposed.
“We feel we need to ensure community members and – especially – parents are clear on our position in this matter,” said Education Portfolio Chief Rhonda Kirby. “There is a meeting being scheduled for the end of the month, at which time a decision on the problems of the Annual General Assembly’s elections will be addressed and, hopefully, rectified.”
The MCK is committed to working together with the Combined Schools Committee until the issues concerning the Constitution, a joint workplan and other matters are addressed properly.
“Our role is to ensure that matters are handled properly and to give a measure of confidence to the many parents who have come to the Chief and Council with their concerns over the past year,” said Bobby Patton, who shares the Education Portfolio with Chief Kirby. “For the time being, we will continue to co-manage Education until we are confident that measures are in place that will ensure we don’t find ourselves in a similar predicament in the future.”
