CP Tunnel repairs update

01/07/2013

The Community Protection Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to update motorists on the current repairs to the concrete walls inside the Canadian Pacific Tunnel on the Old Malone Highway.

The contractor is scheduled to pour the new concrete walls on Wednesday, January 9th, followed by approximately three days of curing time. The forms should be dismantled beginning on Monday, January 14th and the tunnel is expected to reopen to traffic by Wednesday, January 16th.

Mohawk Masonry was contracted to perform the repairs, which included removal and replacement of loose concrete on both the north and south walls of the structure. To install the form-work, bracing had to extend towards the center of the tunnel by at least four feet on each side restricting safe passage of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Therefore, a complete closure of the tunnel was essential for the safety and health of all workers and community members.

For more information on this project, please contact Louis Stacey, Occupational Safety & Health Coordinator at the Community Protection Unit at 450-632-0635.
