Local IdleNoMore event praised by chiefs
12/20/2012
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that Chief & Council were pleased with today’s peaceful ‘IdleNoMore’ event in support of Chief Theresa Spence and in protest of Canada’s imposition of several pieces of legislation that have angered Native people across the country.
Today’s event, a march to the top of the Mercier Bridge, was attended by over 250 people including several Council chiefs. The entire process took less than an hour.
“Hats off to the organizers who helped mobilize the community this morning,” said Grand Chief Michael Ahríhron Delisle, Jr. “People are very concerned with the actions of this Government, and we need to get the message out that all Native people are growing impatient.”
The MCK would like to remind people that this is a cause that needs to be taken directly to Canada’s leadership. “I’m going to Ottawa tomorrow to participate in the ‘IdleNoMore’ rally, along Lloyd Phillips, Billy Diabo and Clinton Phillips. We’re hoping to be joined by as many Kahnawa’kehró:non as possible to show solidarity and support. Chief Spence told us yesterday that we must stand together because we’re all facing the same issues. And we are united with our First Nations brothers and sisters who are saying that enough is enough – and things had better start changing.”
Participants will meet at Victoria Island and proceed on foot to Parliament Hill at 12 noon.
The MCK is making a bus available for those wishing to attend tomorrow’s event. It will leave the Knights of Columbus at 8:30am and is expected to return by about 5pm. It is first come first served. People who will be making the trip to Ottawa on their own are reminded to drive with caution, as there is a significant snowfall expected.
