Representatives selected for First Nations Youth Forum

The Kahnawà:ke Youth Forum (KYF) is pleased to announce the representatives selected to attend the second annual First Nations Youth Forum from August 24th to the 26th at the Chateau Mont-Sainte-Anne in Beaupre, Quebec.

Megan Kanerahtenha:wi Whyte (21) is an artist and art educator who created the logo for the KYF. She is entering her fourth year of the Art Education Specialization with a minor in Psychology at Concordia University.

Shotehra Rice (21) is the Treasurer for the KYF and has been attending meetings for roughly one and a half years. He is currently attending Concordia University in the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Kawennahere Jacobs (19) is currently entering her third year at John Abbott College in the Youth & Adult Correctional Intervention program. She has been involved with the KYF since August of 2009 and was chosen to attend the 2010 Gathering our Voices Youth Conference in British Columbia.

“The three Youth Representatives will be participating in workshops, attending presentations, visiting youth exhibitions and booths,” said Chief Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer. “But more importantly they will be sharing with other First Nations Youth the experience of getting mobilized and networking with each other. “

The criteria used to select the youth were: to have participated at Kahnawà:ke Youth Forum meetings and events; be someone who demonstrated leadership and responsibility; is respectful, expressive and open minded; is pursuing an education or is employed; and is a positive representation for our community. The main objective of the Forum is to motivate the mobilization of First Nations Youth by demonstrating the importance of getting involved, mobilized, structured and becoming the voice of change for the benefit of all First Nations Youth.

The KYF would like to thank all of the applicants for their interest in attending the First Nations Youth Forum and we encourage all Kahnawa’kehró:non Youth to attend the next local Youth Forum meeting scheduled for late September – date to be confirmed.
