MCK issues safety warning to the community
05/16/2012
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is issuing a warning to Kahnawa’kehró:non that certain people have been recently removing sewer grates or manhole covers on streets in some areas of the community.
“This form of vandalism is extremely dangerous and could result in serious injury or even death,” said Supervisor of Infrastructure, Operation and Maintenance Peter Stacey. “The uncovered manholes and storm drains are large enough for a child to fall into or cause extensive damage to vehicles.”
Residents are being asked to exercise extra care when driving, bicycling or walking – especially at night. If an uncovered manhole or storm drain is discovered, please contact the Peacekeepers immediately. Additionally, community members are also being asked to be extra vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
“This type of behavior is not only irresponsible, it is unbelievably malicious,” said Stacey. “Anyone participating in this activity is being urged to stop it immediately.”
