02/21/2012
The Kahnawą:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (the Commission) wishes to inform the community that a brief survey is underway regarding a Request for Legislation to prohibit the sale, manufacture and distribution of tobacco within the Territory. The survey will be made available at a kiosk to be located at the Kahnawą:ke Services Complex from 9am to 3pm on Thursday, 23 Ennķska/February. Other dates may be announced in the near future.
The proponent of the Request for Legislation and a Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke (MCK) technician will be on hand on that date to assist with the survey and answer questions.
Those who would like to fill out the survey can contact Jeffrey Diabo at 514-774-6404 or jeffrey.diabo@mck.ca. Surveys can also be accessed at the Community Decision Making Process website at www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com or at the MCK main office reception. Please note that the surveys cannot be filled out online but, once printed out and completed, should be delivered to Mr. Diabo or dropped off at reception at the MCK main office.
The deadline for this survey period is Friday, 30 Enniskó:wa/March.
The proposal was submitted to the Commission on 29, Ohiarikó:wa/July 2010 and includes the following specific requests:
1. The distribution and sale of any and all cigarettes within the Kahnawake territory is hereby deemed illegal.
2. The mass production of any tobacco that is not strictly intended for personal use, such as medicinal, be deemed illegal.
The MCK would like to be clear that the submission of this Request for Legislation follows the Community Decision Making Process guidelines and, as such, does not necessarily reflect the position of the MCK regarding the manufacture, sale or distribution of tobacco products within the Territory.
