Election Law to go to first Community Hearing
02/06/2012
The Kahnawą:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission announced today that proposed changes to the Mohawk Council of Kahnawį:ke Election Law will be brought forward using the Community Decision Making Process at a Community Hearing on Tuesday, 28 Enniska/February.
It is hoped that the community can agree upon the scope, purpose and intent of the proposed amendments, with the ultimate intention of having the community give a mandate to a working group to create amendments that meets its needs.
Proposed amendments were initially requested by community member Lori Jacobs. A working group was formed, consisting of Jacobs, Angus L. Montour, Darlene Alfred (all former Electoral Officers) and Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke (MCK) technicians. Information was made available to community members on the topic last fall, using various means.
Copies of the current law, the community consultation feedback report, and other relevant information are available at the MCK main office reception or by accessing the website www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com.
This first Community Hearing will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall from 6 to 8pm. Please note that the organizers will be maintaining a strict schedule of two hour meetings in order to respect the schedules of as many people as possible. Additionally, they are asking that participants arrive at approximately 5:45pm in order for seating arrangements to be explained.
