Environment Portfolio Chief to attend Bruce Power meeting with Ontario chiefs
06/14/2011
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that Chief Clinton Phillips, who holds the MCK’s Environment portfolio, will be attending a meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) between the Ontario chiefs and Bruce Power to discuss concerns over the proposed transportation of sixteen used nuclear steam generators through the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River/Seaway.
A large number of communities have voiced their concerns over the shipments, with over eighty passing resolutions against the plan.
“Our message has been consistent and simple,” said Chief Phillips. “The technology should be brought to the site rather than having Bruce Power risk contaminating the source of fresh water for more than 20 million people.”
Chief Phillips was asked to participate after the MCK signed a tri-Council resolution condemning the plan on 8 Enníska/February with the elected Councils of Akwesasne and Tyendinaga. The St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Council and the Kahnawà:ke Branch of the Mohawk Nation (Longhouse at 207) also have issued similar statements.
