Disability Subsidy policy added to Social Assistance program
04/14/2011
The Social Development Unit (SDU) of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke is pleased to announce a new Disability Subsidy policy that has been incorporated into the Kahnawą:ke Social Assistance Program. The Subsidy is for low income adults who suffer medical conditions that render them unable to work or function and are not eligible for any type of pension or disability benefits.
A subsidy of $300 dollars per month will be available to persons under the age of 65 who qualify by meeting various criteria. Until now, regulations have precluded individuals who have an employed spouse and become incapacitated or disabled from receiving social assistance benefits.
Funds for this subsidy will be taken from the Basic Needs budget and beneficiaries will also be eligible for other special needs items where applicable (special diet, wheelchair, etc).
The policy was approved by the SDU Committee on Thursday, April 7th and is effective immediately. Further information on criteria and how to apply for the subsidy is available at the SDU by visiting their offices in the Services Complex, first floor or by calling 450-638-0500.
